Im an old school horror fan, but the best (and scariest) that come to mind are Salem's Lot, the one from the eighties not nineties, The Children also from the eighties, and The Evil. Very scary movies.

If you go to VH1classic.com You will see A link for EVEN SCARIER MOVIE MOMENTS, it will show you the top 30 scariest movies ever made as of 2006, the movies were chosen by a panel of judges who made a list of componets that ever scary movie had to have and picked the best, But in my opion PHYCO, is a wonderful movie, as far as horror movies go.

I'll give you some categories to help you out if you prefer one kind over another.
Zombie - Dawn of the Dead (I prefer the original)
Ghost - The Grudge
Vampire - John Carpenter's Vampires
Slasher - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Again, the original)
Overall Classic - The Shining
Gore Fest - Saw 2 or Hostel
Alien - um...Alien
Others - The Thing, IT, Silent Hill, and Dead Life (it's an indy, crappy effects, but still creepy).

28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
Army of Darkness
Dawn of the Dead
Descent
Devil's Advocate
Devil's Rejects
From Hell
House of 1000 Corpses
Planet Terror (from Grindhouse)
Saw
Saw II
Saw III
Silent Hill
Sleepy Hollow
of those i'd say silent hill and planet terror are the most fun.
The most ridiculous "horror" movie of all time is
Troll 2.

"The Shining" (the original with Jack Nicholson. The remake is a sleeper0
"The Haunting" (again, the original B&W from the '50s. The remake is sloppy and not at all scary)
