The mind is a fraction of the ego. The ego is you, your actual self. You thoughts can deeds, which would originate in your mind, are what can destroy the ego, if you're not in control of yourself and your mind.

Realize that they are related. The ego was termed by Freud to mean the part of the mind which contains the consciousness. Along with the ego Freud maintained there was a super-ego and an id. The id was based on the pleasure principle and immediate gratification. The super-ego tends to be the opposing factor of the id, and is commonly referred to as the conscience. The ego on the other hand is the balance between the two and is our consciousness that works to balance the id and ego and decide the correct course of action. The banner term "mind" would actually incorporate all of the three pre-mentioned terms.

Ego is your (faulty) concept of who you are, your appearance, your attitudes, your likes & dislikes, your so-called personality, your family tree, your ethnisity, your level of income, education, religion, .... that you would define yourself "through things or conditions" .
Like God who we cannot put into a shape, your true self cannot be explained through all these conditions you have.
Yet you and your friends define who you are through the conditions, that's EGO who want to define you into conditions.
You don't have to destroy your ego to be enlightend, but when you overcome your ego and see what is hidden underneath the ego you'll be close to enlightenment.
Mind... keep telling you things through logics, reasons, etc. Mind is a tool ego is using to strengthen it - since it's keep talking talking talking. Can you stop all the thinking (without fall a sleep) for one minutes? When we silent the mind, ego (who is feeding on the noisy, restless thinking) will be weakened for a while.

Human behavior flows from three main sources: Desire, emotion, and knowledge. Desire is ego, and knowledge is mind. Emotion is how you feel them both.
