Some pros have aways been at the Olympics. When you see a 30 year old who claims to be a high school student you realize he is not an amateur. Some countries have always supported their Olympic athletes and other countries have done nothing for their athletes. At least now most of the people are on a level playing field when it comes to being able to support themselves so they can compete.

Pros are officially allowed to the Olympics - see who has been playing tennis or who has competed at the bicycle races.
Boxing is still fought with amateur rules in the Olympics and with soccer there is an age limit.
The amateur rules were only invented for the modern Olympic Games (starting 1896). In ancient Greece the competitors were pros as well.

In the beginning the amateur rule was that strict that e.g. a skiing teacher was not allowed to compete in skiing in the winter games.

Austrian skier Karl Schranz was thrown out of the 1972 Olympics because he wore a football shirt with a coffee makers logo in a fun/charity football match.

The word "amateur" actually means someone who does a thing for the love of it only. If pros were openly allowed to compete in the Olympics the spirt of the games would be lost and the whole thing would turn into a commercial for Nike.
