I'm just glad other leagues don't the rule - I don't want to see Any Reid in tight football pants, or Stan Van Gundy in basketball shorts.

They don't have to wear the uniforms, they could wear a suit if they wanted. They wouldn't be able to step foot on the field, though. MLB has a rule that says you can't be on the field as a player/manager/coach unless you are in numbered uniform. Connie Mack used to manage in a suit, but he could never go out and argue with the umos over a call or go out to make a pitching change - his coaches or other players had to do it for him. Some of the guys do look completely ridiculous in the uniforms (Cox and Lasorda are the two that come right to mind) but not all of them.

Mike and Mike were talking about that on ESPN the other morning. I agree that some managers & coaches look pretty foolish in a uniform (i.e Joe Torre, Bobby Cox). I don't see them wearing suits either but a polo shirt with the team logo and khakis would certainly look a lot better.

There is a rule that you must have a uniform on to go on the field. Managers couldn't go out to make pitching changes or argue calls if they weren't in uniform. I'm not sure if their is an exception for athletic trainers or how it works that they just wear some professional attire but not a uniform.

Some guys look good in the uniform but many look silly. I think it dates back to when managers were frequently also players.

The managers wear uniforms because they are considered "players" and can take the field if they wish.
Outdated, though.

In days of olde there were player-managers. Pete Rose was the last. It's not likely we'll see one again, but you never know.

This is just an old tradition and when many were player/managers that will never die!
