400ft^3

Imagine a rectangle of 1X1X1 - vol of 1ft^3
Then double the dimensions as in the problem above
2X2X2 = 8 ft^3

Doubling the length of all of the sides yields an 8X increase in the vol

Therefore 50X8 = 400

The easiest way for me to solve a question like this is to put it in terms of actual numbers. You know that given the way the question's asked, this would work for any rectangular solid that has a volume of 50 cubic feet--so come up with a rectangular solid with a volume of 50 cubic feet!

Length: 50 feet.
Width: 1 foot
Height: 1 foot.

50' * 1' * 1' = 50 cubic feet.

Now double it.

Length: 100 feet
Width: 2 feet
Height: 2 feet

100' * 2' * 2' = 400 cubic feet.

A1 = b x l x h = 50
2 x b x 2 x l x 2 x h = A2 = 8 x b x l x h
A2 = 8 x 50 = 400

400 cubic feet.
If you double one side, you will have double the cubic feet. You're doubling three sides, so you double it three times consecutively:

50(2)(2)(2)=400

400
V = base * width * hieght
pick random numbers that multioply to get 50
like 1*2*25 = 50 then double them
2*4*50 = 400cubic feet
