A person can't just eat bread and water and hope to live another day. You gotta have something more to keep you going. And when a person wants something, even though it is not important to his survival, it keeps the person busy, living life and striving towards a goal.

You would want something if you have a desire or craving for it. We need survival but we also want happiness and we think that 'things' make us happy. The human condition is that we have many cravings and desires so this makes us want many things. But if you are content with the way things are and what you have, you will have no point in wanting something.
This is a buddhist view anyways.
