Check out www.hotels.com as they have specials all the time....a look yesterday for the end of July showed me prices anywhere from $129-$189 per night on the Magnificient Mile. These are also 3 and 4 star hotels.
You might also want to check hotwire.com as they have specials much cheaper than other sites.
When you check these sites be sure to specify the downtown area.

There are plenty of Hotels on the Mag Mile...none of them cheap. Your best bet is to stay at one of the outlying suburban motels and take Public Transportation in. I recommend finding a hotel in Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines. Then climb aboard Metra (Commuter Rail Service) and go downtown and then transfer to the CTA Busses when you get downtown. I believe for the taste of Chicago there is a special Shuttle Bus that leaves the Metra Station for Navy Pier.

The marriot is decent. Check on hotwire.com as well. if you see anything under 150 on the mag mile, take it. it's (the hotel) most likely a wonderful hotel regardless of the opinions posted by visitors.

I just reserved a room at the Westin Michigan Avenue last week for $149 a night. Try http://www.hotels.com . They always have good deals. Good Luck!
