This morning my car started fine and i got to work. I took off for lunch and it wouldnt start so i jumped it and went to get somethin to eat maybe a tip of 2 miles. Went to start it again and nothing, not even enough power to run the clock. had it jumped again drove home, when the air was on there was a whistling sound. No power whatsoever but when i get jumped I can drive it. Alternator, bad batt, terminals? Any suggestions and if it is the alternator how much to get it fixed? The car is a 2002 hyundai accent gl

It's more than likely the battery. It would not run if it was the alternator and the whistling you are hereing is the alternator working harder. Don't run the AC until you get a new battery. You will burn up the diodes. Make sure to check all your ground connections when you install the new battery and also listen for that whistle again after installing the battery. If it's gone you haven't damaged the alternator.

Well there are three possible problems

1) Bad battery.. go to an autoparts store and they will usually test it for free (buy a jumper box while you are there so you can get yourself out of these jams until you figure out the problem.

2) Bad alternator... same solution.. get it tested.

3) You have something stuck 'on' which sucks you dry over a few hours.

Try disonnecting the battery after you have driven it for a bit. THen go have a beer and sandwich... come back... hook it up and see if it starts. If it does, try the same trick with it connected.. if it doesn't then you have an electrical fault. Start hunting by looking at things you can not obviously notice (alarms, cigarette lighters, low power fans, - back east? maybe you hve an engine warmer or butt warmer seats?

keep hunting til you find it...pull fuses and repeat the 'wait awhile' approach... eventually you will find the short and when you do you will know how to handle it.

good luck (and buy the emergency jump start box !)

First check your battery connections. Make sure they're tight and corrosion free.

Then check all the connections for your alternator. Make sure they're all tight and not frayed.

You can remove your battery (take off both posts and then the mounting bracket) and take it to a parts store and have it checked. If it's good, your problem is with the alternator. Probably about $60 if you put it on yourself, $150 to have someone do it for you.

Good luck!

Check charging system at a service center somewhere.

Could be any of those; probably alternator.

Easiest way to find out where the problem is - take it to one of the bigger auto parts stores in your area, they can check your whole charging system on the car.
