So many liberals that rant on here claim they "don't belong to either party", when in many cases it's obvious from their rambles that they are in line with the leftists Democrats? Is it that they want to give the illusion that they are independant thinkers, or that they are in denial about what they believe, and can't really defend their positions?

Some may nothave understood what I was getting at. I know thatmost people in this country will vote for either party, depending on the candidates available. The fact is though, that most also tend to fall much more in line with one party or the other, and when someone from either side spews talking points, from the national party newsletter, and then tries to shield themselves by saying they are independant, its usually due to an inability to stand up to an honset debate. This happens with conservatives as well, but not nearly as often.

Because they are embarassed to be called Democrats. Let's face it, very few people can tolerate all the views of the Democratic platform. Who in their right mind really believes that gay marriage is good for the rising generation? Who in their right mind really believes that a "woman's right to choose" should not be infringed under any circumstance? Even the people that are in favor of abortion don't like the current Democratic line that says, "Abortion should be safe, affordable, and rare." They think either that abortion should be abolished, or frequent. There are millions of abortions every year in America, no one would define millions as "rare."
Who really believes that Al Gore was the best candidate to represent this nation in 2004?
The Democratic party is just an embarassment. But it doesn't embarass a single Republican--what do they care? It only embarasses Democrats because it is so "open" a party that it accepts every nut-case that comes along, and tries to make them feel "included." This makes it look pretty doggone foolish.
How can a Democrat stand proudly when he is so wrong? He can't. So he cowers, and shies away from his party on the hopes that he can maintain a little dignity.
But--he's an eternal optimist. When he walks into that booth to vote, he'll pull a straight Democratic ticket. When he loses the election, he'll fight for "voters rights" and swear the election must be rigged!
How could others not see how smart he is? "Is everyone in America that stupid?" he'll ask. And the answer is, "No everyone in America isn't as stupid as a Democrat."
So, again, many Democrats will become Independent, until the next election.
37% of the people in this country identify themselves with the Democratic Party. 36% of the people in this country identify themselves with the Republican party. 23% identify themselves as Independents.
50% of the people in this country are not as smart as the other 50%.
The only question you can really ask is, who is in which half?

A liberal could also be a member of The Green Party or an independent who is turned off by The Democratic Party's tendency to nominate people who support capital punishment (like the Clintons), or the kind of "free" trade that would make it impossible to raise the minimum wage without losing a lot of jobs to countries where the workers have no rights.

I see myself as liberal, but I wouldn't join either the Democrats or Greens because I think we should be protecting equal opportunity for the unborn as well as gays and women.

We can't be "drafted" into a party because we agree with it on a lot of issues, but disagree on a few.

It strikes me as odd that you still think there are differences in either party

There are none, They are both after the same things

MONEY, POWER, POSITION, in that order

you act as if both sides don't do their fare share of ranting on and on about issues that the people in charge flip-flop on depending on which Lobbyist promises what to who, in the position of senator or Representative you make contact with those that can fund what ever you want, one way or another,

certainly Libertarian. No the place close to average. in terms of events, autonomous is actual. Your stance on social themes isn't Liberal-centred. The Liberal view is that everybody desires to be compelled ( by federal government law) to stick to their perspectives. in assessment, Libertarians have the view that human beings ought to be waiting to stick to their very own very own ideals.. in addition they want to decrease the federal government law and quite enable states to administration themselves.

I don't think being a member of either party precludes one from being an independent thinker.

I'm liberal, I am not affiliated with either party so I call myself "independent"

I am not in denial about what I believe, I am fully aware of what I believe and can usually defend my position. But thanks for asking.

because MOST americans aren't in line with your insane talking points.

i live in massachusetts - WHERE MOST VOTERS HAVE NO PARTY AFFILIATION.

but that doesn't jibe with the rush/hannity/oreilly rubbish you hear and repeat - so you come on here and try to 'wish' people into line with your pathetic talking points.

sorry sparky, it's you who are out of step here.

each day i see the radical cons straying further and further from the herd - it's almost as theough they want to lose elections and power...

Because then we would have to admit that the GOP has been hijacked by the liberals, and nobody wants to admit that!

I've noticed that also. I heard about a recent poll and wish I had a link to it that said the Dems are not happy with their candidates. They want a Dem to get into office, but are having a tough time with those who are running.

I suspect that might explain many things.

No. It simply means that people are abandoning the two main parties and that you are reading too much into their comments.

What is a 'leftist democrat'? I have yet to see any leftist who would lower him or herself by calling themselves a 'Democrat'.
