A mate of mine downloaded a pirate copy of Windows Media Center 2002 and when the activation prompt came up he clicked it to see what would happen, expecting it to tell him he "had been a victim of software piracy" or something but it just activated fine. Any theories? lol

he might not be able to do important updates though...which is crucial for safety. remember - its copyright theft & if you do get caught...you are in hot water!!

Like all software, Windows Activation is not infallible. There are many reasons for this, such as:

1) It could be a volume licensed edition and volume licensing key
2) The hardware could be the same or very similar to the original activating computer
3) Sunspots

You can install windows on any PC and it will work fine up until the point you try to get the important security updates, when you try and verify your copy of windows it will fail.

Another thought if your friend PC isn't directly connected to the net it makes it harder for Microsoft to track down those who committed fraud.
