I rarely ever say it, but when i do, i mean it. I hate when people ask me how i am, but they dont care. when people ask me now, i just say "fine" because i know thats probably what they want me to say. But if i think they really care, i will answer more honestly and specifically. When I ask people and they just say "fine", I usually have to ask more questions to find out a real answer, because everyone is used to people asking that just as a nicety, with no meaning behind it.

Yes if the person I am asking will respond in a word or 2 but I could care less about your family illnesses or whatever else people say.

I think it is just second nature to ask whether you really care or not. It is sad though, most of the time we really do not want to hear what someone else has to say.

Most the time I really want to know, But I am sure there I times I could not care. I think we all have those times but most of us are polite and really do care. So may I ask "How are you today?"

Not usually, I realize the same thing of other people who ask me, thats why I always say "im good" when asked.
Noone really wants to be burduned with your problems.
Unless its a good friedn of mine or a close family member,m then I will tell them how I am actually doing.

Usually...I try not to ask the question to the people that I know will give me their full mental, physical, emotional or financial histories...
Depends on the way I say it..."hey, how are you?" is slightly different then "hey...how are you..." (hmmm...that difference doesn't translate well non-verbally...)
