there's a lot of research needed to be done before going out with the salvage ship..the Spanish maintain excellent records of all their ships that went missing in Cadiz, called the "Archive of the Indies"..that can narrow the area down......you then get decent sized motor vessel and tow a "side scan sonar" behind, or a magnetometer.a device that registers chunks of iron or ferrous metals ( like cannon)........

back in the day, Mel Fisher had a vague idea where Atocha might be found......he built a right angle chute that would fit over the props on his boats and direct the prop wash down, blowing away huge amounts of sand.....needless to say, no states Environmental Police would allow such a thing now a days....and it still took Fisher 10 plus years to stumble across the wreck....

and for more modern treasure hunting and the biggest find ever, read "Ship of Gold" and Tommy Thompson's amazing find of the $200,000,000 wreck of the "Central America"
