MAJOR SPOILER ALERT - that question is a major plot point in the sixth book.

horcruxes are objects in which an evil wizard can store part of his soul. That way, if he dies, the part of the soul stored in an object can remain alive, and the wizard can be restored later

they can only be created by killing another human being, which rips part of your soul out, which is then trapped in the horcrux.

this is how voldemort stayed alive despite the rebounding curse

A horcrux is part a o witch or wizard's soul, ripped away from the whole soul magically encased and inserted into another object for safekeeping. By doing that one cannot be completely killed. Only by destroying the horcrux first can he/she be killed.

This is incredibly important for DH--you need to read HBP first.

Some think Harry is a horcrux, but I think Harry is not a horcrux!

This idea makes no sense in light of the prophesy for one, and why would Voldemort put part of his soul into someone he might have to fight anyway. If he kills Harry, he's wasted part of his soul. Also, I reject the idea that Harry became a horcrux as an unintentional byproduct of the rebounding of Voldemort's killing curse. The byproduct is known and is the empathic bound between the two, and that's all, IMHO.

Remember too that all the horcruxes have to be destroyed before Voldemort is vulnerable to death. If Harry is a horcrux, then Harry must die first, then Voldemort. So it would mean that Harry would have to loose a killing curse at Voldemort just after Voldemort loosed a killing curse against him--that is very tricky timing!.

I take the prophecy to mean that vanquishing Voldemort it Harry's job--no chance that Voldemort becomes vulnerable with a Harry sacrifice and with Harry dead, someone else kills Voldemort. Remember that Voldemort is very powerful wizard and other witches or wizards likely can't pull it off, as a practical matter.

Voldemort put pieces of his soul into 6 different objects. This way if his physical body is destroyed parts of his soul are still earthbound so he is not dead. That is how he survived the rebounded avada cadavra curse the night he tried to kill Harry.

Now Harry must find these objects and destroy the parts of Voldemorts soul in them other wise if he just tried to kill Voldemort he would return again just like before becuase there would still be parts of his soul earthbound. Harry and Dumbledore found some and destroyed them. the seventh book will primarily be about finding and destroying these things before the final showdown.

You should really read the 6th book theres lots of background on Voldemort and hints abotu what the objects are and where they might be found.

Horcruxes are essentially phylactories. The concept being that powerful wizards can place their souls in objects other than their bodies, so killing their body doesn't hurt them but destroying the object does.

You'll see it in D&D elements, and classic folklore. Lloyd Alexander adopted it in one of the Chronicles of Prydain (which largely worked off Welsh mythology) books where he has a wizard who cut off his pinky finger, and put his soul in the bone and hid it. The hero of the story was unable to hurt the wizard himself, but when he snapped the finger bone, the wizard died.

Rowlings went with this idea, except that she had Voldemort split his soul six ways, and put each part of his soul into six different objects. Thus, the only way to kill him would be to destroy all six objects. In the books, several have been found and destroyed, but a couple are still missing. There is speculation that Harry is somehow one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, and so the only way to kill Voldemort will be to also kill Harry.

a horocrux is a splitting of the soul. A wizard can "trap" part of his/her soul so that if he were "to be killed" a part of his/her soul would be kept safe. Therefore the person would not be truly dead. Voldemort created 6 hororcruxes to keep his soul (at least that is what Dumbledore thought). You need to commit murder in order to create a horocrux.

You really really REALLY should read the sixth book. Lots of important plot there.

In a nutshell, Horcruxes are where Voldemort "stows" pieces of his soul. So, should he ever die, he can just get a piece of his soul out if one of the Horcruxes, and Ta-da! all better. Well, not ALL better, but you get the drift.

Tom Riddle's journal was a Horcrux. That's why Hogwarts-age Voldemort was able to "materialize" in "Chamber of Secrets."

The ring in book 6 you didn't read about was also a Horcrux. There's a missing locket that is supposed to be one... Nagini the snake is rumored to be one... And so on and so forth.

Read the book. It'll explain it much better.

they are parts of voldemort's soul stored in random objects. their point is to make voldmort nearly impossible to kill and to make him alsmost immortal because you must destroy all horocruxes before you can actually kill voldemort.

also, you should read the 6th book. it isn't the best. but it really helps you understand the 7th book.
