Because public transport in Britain is run by a shambolic patchwork of private companies who are all trying to extract the greatest profits so as not to fall foul of their franchise obligations (just look at GNER to see why they're all afraid!).

The government squawk a lot about the environment but are unwilling to lend a sympathetic hand to passengers on public transport.

Because public transport can be cheaper, but they don't advertise the cheapest options (some companies tell their employees at the ticket desk to not tell a costomer the cheapest option, unless they specifically ask).

Also, public transport is run by a group of private companies out to get profits. The fact that public transport is rarely clean and comfertable tells you that they could not care less about the people on the train/bus. THe extortionate prices emphesise this.

Also, the whole green thing is a gimick. They realise that the only way now to stop global warming is to stop every electrical appliance in the world for ever.

Making public transport cheaper would mean less profits for those who already make fistfulls of money at our expense. Perhaps MP's should try using a bus once in a while (squished betwen 50 other people with no leg room unless you are 3 years old), instead of their private cars or bikes (their efforts in being green - a bike - is hardly going to change the world).

The only way to make public transport cheaper is to subsidise it.
To subsidise it then the government must collect some revenue.
Now where do you suggest they collect the revenue?
I know, they can tax rail and air tickets

Usually that happens when a private company is trying to recover the investment and profit before the system becomes obsolete. Once obsolete they sell it back to the government, and the government then runs a piece of crap. At this point it become a cycle.

Because people hate public transport and like budget airlines.
