How about dwarf Gourami?
The first web-link shows one of many of the dwarfs and also shows good community fish to try with them:

Just remember that they still have their own personalities and may not like one from the list. In those cases you can most likely trade for another of equal value or from same store tank.

Also, learn about cycling and set up your tank and add a few live plants and let it run for 3 or 4 weeks before you add your fish. I would add no more than 4 fish the size of the dwarf or smaller fish to a 10 gallon tank.

The link below describes 3 different ways to cycle a new tank, scroll down about half way: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/in..

I have two 10 gal. tanks. In one, I have a dwarf puffer and two mollies. In the other, I have about 15 guppies.

I would definately recommend a dwarf puffer. They are such interesting fish to watch as they swim around and check out things in the tank. They can get a bit aggressive, but aren't fast swimmers, so just make sure you put him with fish that fast swimmers, aren't too small, and don't have large fins that could get damaged if he takes a nip at them.
