All major manufacturers are about the same... What matters most are the specs. For $300, whatever you can get is probably good, but you should ask them what the specs are.

Compaq has a very good history, they're made by HP and get very good dependability ratings. The problem is I can't tell you if it's a good deal without hearing more about it. How much memory, hard drive space, processor, operating system etc. Repost or email and I can try to help you out. I was also looking at the other answers. You can get a good laptop for cheap. I don't know about this one particularly but I've seen very good laptops in the $500-$600 range.

I had two compaq laptops and a sony vaio in the last years, and from my point of view, Compaq is a good brand which will work for you for a long time. on the other hands, Sony which I think is the best laptop brand has a better performance but will encounter serious problems in a shorter time compared to Compaq.
So, you should check out their CPU, hard disk, OS, and if you're gonna play games on your laptop, the Graphic and Sound card. Then you should select the optimum choice for better system with lower price.
Also the price is good, and I think you should buy it.

Compaq is an excellent brand. I would be highly suspect of any laptop for $300 or even $500.
Look at hp.com (they own the compaq brand) or Dell.com to get price comparisons.
You won't find a decent laptop for much less than $1,000.

I recommend you buy a custom made laptop. A compaq will be a good brand to buy from.
