Jewelry in Africa was no different from it's use anywhere else. It was used to enhance beauty, to display social or marital status, or as tribal idenitfication. Masks were used for ritual purposes, the details varying from place to place and over time. They are not unlike the veils worn by brides or the costumes worn by priests or professional athletes.

well there are different tribes and they wear them for different reasons. one of them (dont ask me the name) wears mask as an initiation into manhood. a member of the trivbe would dress up as a monster with a wooden mask (the little kids dont know who he is, they think he's a monster) and he takes the teenage boys with him, later he takes the mask off and tell stories about the tribe to the kids. (myths and legends of creation)
the girls generally get dolls to take care of, they learn how to be like their mother and older sisters from the dolls
