In the beginning, they start smoking usually out of vanity. Peer pressure is a poor and mostly inaccurate excuse. They just think it looks good, or something like that. Sort of the way that some kids look at their parents drinking coffee, and decide that they want to drink coffee, because it looks grown up.

After they smoke a few cigarettes, they often become physically addicted to niccotine, and develop a compulsion to perform the hand/mouth movements asscoiated with cigarettes. Also, they begin to taste really good. The hand/mouth movements along with the physical reward that comes with the influx of nicottine becomes comforting, calming.

It is one of the most difficult addictions to put down, but it can be done.

I am convinced that a friend said a prayer for me, because I have been nicottine free since October 2005, by the grace of God.

Namaste.

EDITED TO ADD:
Weight...when I quit, I put on an extra 10 pounds. And it wasn't because I started eating more. Nicottine is a stimulant, and speeds up your metabolism a little. Take it away, and you are liable to gain a few pounds. I could have probably avoided it if I have started exercizing.

Its proven to make you look 10% cooler.

It is a mild sedative. It has been used for centuries as such. The most harmful parts are really the additives, it would be great it if were feasible to grown it yourself, but it just isnt practical. That would provide clean tobacco though, none of the horrible impurities. Cancer risk would still be somewhat high, but that is from the burn as much as the toxins.

Do you stop doing everything that is harmful to you? Do you eat only what is perfect for you per the food pyramid, or whatever theyre suggesting today and drink only water? Do you exercise daily and avoid all stress? You make you choices and I'll make mine. I do it because I like the flavor, I enjoy the socialization with it, enjoy the feeling, and relish in the sedative qualities, just like I do with alcohol.

Initially out of curiosity. I started smoking alone and got a pleasent headrush out of it. I never thought I would get addicted.

After that it is because of nicotine addictions. I am not under any illusions that I enjoy cigarette smoke. It tastes and smells disgusting.

The only reason I perceive to enjoy it is because it satisfies my cigarette cravings which are similar to an intense thirst on a hot day.

Nicotine addiction is extremely hard to come out of. I have tried four times and each time I have failed miserably.

The nicotine gives a "head rush" and is highly addictive.
Yes, when I quit smoking, I found it hard to fathom what could be the attraction but when you are in the throws of an addiction, it isn't so hard to understand.

It's hard to describe if you have never smoked. It relaxes and satisfies you, and it's 100 times better when you have a drink too. I enjoyed smoking ,that's why i did it, not becasue it looks cool (um it looked stupid!!!)

I gave up 4 months ago and I am STILL getting cravings!!!!

Immature people think it looks cool or they want to smoke because their peers do it. Some people claim it helps to keep their weight down but there is no proof of that. It is highly addictive and very hard to quit.

only the people who are cool enough smoke..

just kidding, for me it was more of a habit than an addiction. Cig with a cup of tea, cig while waiting for a bus etc. For a lot of people its just something to do, for others it's an actual addiction. But ultimately i think people start purely out of curiosity, just like you want to know why people do it, they see the best way to understand to be to actually try it..

I smoke because:

1. I'm addicted.
2. It gives me a relaxed feeling.
3. I like the taste.

It's a nasty habit, but I'm going to quit.

It usually relaxes a person, if they a nervous or some just smoke to get that little high. It gives me a little high. I only smoke when im drinkin though. I dont know why but smokin and drinkin go together. Its bad. Im disappointed in myself for smoking.
