Some people believe there are two types of freedom - (1) freedom to - to do what you want, and (2) freedom from - away from the things you don't want.
Freedom has a deep historical context in the US. From the Europeans seeking a better life in the new world, to the war to of independence to abolition, freedom is an important and nation-defining concept for the USA.
In recent times, however, the term "freedom" has been misused, overused and generally cheapened by activists on the political right who have tried to associate it with "free trade" and "free markets". It is a tenuous link, at best, as "free markets" have been intimately associated with the virtual enslavement of whole populations through debt and lowly-paid jobs.
So I think the current political rhetoric about "spreading freedom" being a "free nation" etc etc is just a gross and crass oversimplification. Such language has been misleading and unhelpful in the past. Beware the politician that throws the term around. It may sound nice, but does it really mean?

No. Free are those who earn their freedom. Check out thus spake Zarathustra.
I also like Sartre's definition of inescapable freedom.
The conclusion is the same though. Unless you rebel against tyranny your freedom is meaningless.

You are free to do whatever you want. Just don't hurt any ones feelings, don't say anything politicly incorrect, don't demand that your rights be respected. All you have to do to enjoy your freedom is follow along, fit in and do not create any waves. Then you to can be as free as any other brainwashed drudge.

Freedom is an illusion that we have. We can not do anything that we want at anytime. there are laws that give us a certain amount of freedom, but we are not completely free what so ever.

Question organized religion or conservatism and you are smeared mercilessly.
