I think you are refering to sum
sigma
1+2+3+4 = sigma i, i = 1, i = 4
the 1 will be on bottom and 4 on top.
its just a short way of eriting sum instead of saying 1 + 2+ 3+ 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 for example.
or 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4 ^2 can be written as
sigma i^2, i = 1, i = 4

It means the sum of the numbers. The top little number is the total number to stop at. The bottom little number is how far apart the numbers are that you add. For instance. If you have a list of numbers like this:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18
and the top little number was 12
and the bottom little number was 3
then you would add all together
3+6+9+12

like a backwards 3 yea, i forget what its called but its used for defining area that is bound by the line (y = 0) and an equation. The numberup the top and bottom are the limits of the area that is to be calculated.
