I work with premature baies, and my best friend just had her baby at 34 weeks. She got to hold him for just a few seconds. He was taken to the NICU right after that. He was there for 10 days. Babies stay until they are anywhere from 36-40 weeks gestation, it just depends on how they are doing.
At 34 weeks the baby's lungs will probably be mature. The problems that arise are not feeding well, because they burn too many caolries when doing so and so some need an NG tube for a few days. Also they get jaundice and they usually need the lights for a day or 2 to help with that. Cognitively your child will be normal, there should be no long term effects, but you will have to be very careful in the late fall and winter months, because RSV is much worse in premature babies. Most kids get it and parents never know because it mimicks a cold, but in premies it causes pnemonia or bronchiolitis. My friends son got RSV 2x this winter and was hospitalized once. Also the baby will probably have acid reflux and may need medication for this.

I delivered my first child at 34 weeks. When she was born, she was wisked off to the NICU immediately. She could not "remember" to have her heart beat and breath at the same time. They kept her in the NICU for 10 days and then sent her home on a breathing/heart monitor. It would make a loud, jarring noise if she stopped breathing or her heart stopped. The sudden noise would surprise her and get her heart/breath going again. It was agonizing! However, the monitor only stayed on a month. She is a very happy, healthy 13 year old now! If your baby is born early, they will keep it only as long as they have to. No worries, there is not any magic to the 40 week number.

My friend delivered a girl at 34 weeks and she was fine weighed right at 5 lbs. A nurse told me girls mature faster and boys born that early usually have some issues and have to stay longer. My friend only stayed 3 days at the hospital

My best friend delivered her daughter @ 33 weeks and 6 days, and they only kept the baby for 5 days, and the only reason why they kept her that long was because she wasn't taking enough milk from the bottle or breast so until she could, they had to feed her through an IV. All babies are different though

I delivered at 32 weeks because I had toxemia and my blood pressure was sky high!!!!! My daughter weighed 3 pounds 8 ounces.... She had to stay in NICU for 3 weeks before she could come home...It was very hard and I prayed to god everyday, but eventually when she did come home she had to wear a heart monitor for 6 months due to apnea, but other than that she was well. Today she is 7 years old and by looking at her you would never know she was a preemie...Best of luck to you

I delivered at 33 weeks and my daughter was healthy, but they kept her for 8 days after she was born because they said her skin looked jaundiced (she wasn't). If a baby is healthy they will send it home with the mother, even if it was born earlier than the due date. My daughter was 5lbs 14 oz., which is smaller than my others, but she was fine. They said that my 1st born looked jaundiced also, but did NOT keep her.............unfortunately my babies just have yellow undertones.(smile)

My daughter was born at 25 weeks and is perfectly normal! Depending on her breathing she may have to stay for a couple days or weeks. At 34 weeks your baby will be just fine!

I just had my son at 36 weeks and they kept him for 3 days then let me take him home becuase he was healthy. I guess it depends on how big the baby is and how healthy they are....

my twins were born at 36weeks, they were fine (thank my stars) my mother was worried they were too little to come home with me (grandma was "oldschool"). nurses told her that as long as they are eating, gaining a little weight, and can hold their body temperature that they could go home with me. we all were in the hospital the normal 3 days and went home.
