Does anybody know...how that phrase got started and who came up with the word?

I doubt if the true origin can ever be found.

I do know that mule drivers at least as far back as 200 hundred years ago used "Yee" and "Haw" as commands (I forget which means "left" and which means "right"), and they weren't known for written records of their linguistic inventions. If they invented it, no one will ever know for sure, perhaps they carried it over from Europe.

Anyway, it's very likely that "YeeHaw" together was used in a story about a mule driver that was so excited that he didn't know which way to turn, because he said "Yeehaw!"
