so that it is readable and it can be manipulated?

I tried saving it as all files, pdf, trf? what do i do, i've done it before but i can't remember how?

In one of Adobe Readers lower tool bars there is a little icon of a floppy disk. If you float your curser over it, it will say "Save a copy" or something like that. Click on it and it will allow you to save the PDF file to your hard drive.

I guess you want to transfer a normal document?
Well, there are certain free programs out there that can convert a document into a .pdf file.
I looked one up for you:

I did not try it myself, since I own Microsoft Office 2007 and that can convert the documents into .pdf's as well.
So i would advice you to check for viruses before you install the program.
