Because at one time Canada was a French colony

In a series of voyages between 1534 and 1541 Jacques Cartier established bases on and around the St. Lawrence waterway and this led to the founding of New France. It is thought that Canada got its name from Cartier who noticed the Huron and Iroquois inhabitants referring to the land as' Kanata' which means,'cluster of dwellings' or 'small community'.

The English moved into the Hudson Bay area and by the early 1700s had taken over most of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

During the Seven Years War the British defeated the French in 1759 in Quebec on the Plains of Abraham.

In 1763 France handed Canada over to Britain in the Treaty of Paris. However, most of Canada's population was French. The conclusion of the Treaty of Paris gave rise to concerns over losing their rights and heritage. In response to these fears, Britain passed the Quebec Act in 1774 which granted religious (Roman Catholic) and linguistic freedom to the French.

Most French-speakers in Canada today are concentrated in Quebec but more generally across Canada a dual language system is operated with most official documents, signs, etc being in both languages.

Canada is a commonwealth and is still very British due to its history and links with the UK. It's North American meets England but that's what makes it Canadian. You just have to study it or visit it to see. Majority of the whites are from the British Isles.

Concerning the language, it depends on what part of Canada you are talking about. Number one is the province of Quebec. It's a special place and scenario. The French took hold of it and French people settled there. It is like a French province with French people or like it's France, but then because it is Canada, it does not mean it is only French people. There are anglophones and other people in the cities. There are other provinces which have some French speaking population but is not like a Quebec. Also, French is a required subject throughout the country for elementary school for a few years. But overall, even though both languages are official, Canadians speak English (including the many ethnic people and immigrants) more than French by a big margin.

the French founded Canada, the English won the War most people speak english not French, and those that do speak French are mostly (not all) from Quebec and it's not really French anymore more like Quebecois (sp). After the English won the war they gave special conciderations to the French - which IMHO Canada is still paying for.
