My oldest little boy is now 4yrs. I bought him a gold fish when he was 7 mos. old. The fish has got huge! I'm really worried b'cause his scales are sticking out on the sides and its reddish in color where they are sticking out. He looks like he is going to explode. I'm worried he has a disease and it will spread to the other fish.

I'm sorry to say but it does sound like dropsy:
Dropsy is not a specific disease, but rather a condition where the fish's abdomen becomes swollen. It causes concentration of the fluids in the body tissues or cavities. This results in swelling of the fish's abdomen, thus creating a pinecone effect. The scales protrude from the body. A sudden swelling of the abdomen (scales may stick out) is known as acute dropsy while a slow swelling of the abdomen is known as chronic dropsy. The actual cause of this swelling could be one of several conditions:

Acute Dropsy - Internal bacterial infection can cause internal bleeding and thus cause acute dropsy.

Chronic Dropsy - cancer: In this case, the abdomen is slow to swell as the cancer affects the fish's internal organs. If the fish is not isolated in the early stages of the disease, it could spread to other fish that are being housed with the ill fish.

Chronic Dropsy - parasites: Internal parasites can cause dropsy(abdominal swelling) because they are rather large parasites or because of the damage they are causing with the fish's organs. The abdomen tends to swell over a period of time if the fish is infested with internal parasites. It is best to isolate the sick fish at once to help maintain the outbreak of disease with other fish!

Goldfish are said to be somewhat more prone to dropsy than other fish...

You are right, the fish is very sick. The condition is called dropsy and is caused by any one of several different internal infections. Usually once you can see the scales sticking out it's very hard to treat. You can try antibiotics such as Furanace or Furan-2, but to be honest chances of curing him are very slim.

As a side note, you don't want to allow the fish to die in the same tank with other fish, The chances of spreading the disease responsible are quite high if this happens.

Your best course of action probably is to remove and humanely euthanize the sick fish.

First, you should put it in a different bowl/aquarium until you find out what's going on. Then you may want to take it to the doctor's office. I would also recommend tetrafin. It repairs fins and prevents scratches.

Also, the fish is kinda old, so it could die. (sorry!) If it does die, get it out of the aquarium as soon as possible. It could spread something to your other fishies!!

Well good luck, and sorry if it does die!

p.s. One of the main reasons for fishies death is overfeeding them, and then the next is getting a diesease. aka, unclean tank, unhealthy fishies! This could totally be fixed though, just do it quick! Fish are known to be random at times, so he could die any minute!

It appears like nature has solved that is very own situation. If he won't be able to swim to get the nutrients till now the different oranda then he is going to narrow down. you may verify that there is not another reason he's performing lathargic and not ingesting. I extremely have considered some rather fat fish discover nutrients merely super. verify your water parameters. stable success!!

Then I would have a vet look at it. I'm not sure if there's fish vets, but a regular vet might know. He's probably being fed too much. I did that with my goldfish I had when I was younger... they were so little and I fed them too much for a couple weeks and they practically turned into sharks.
