Actually, in Australia today on the news, we've been told too many of us are Vitamin D deficient because of our skin cancer campaigns being too efficient (we're advised to cover up during the summer days between 11 am and 3 pm because of the potent sun's rays), and people stay covered up in winter, hence the deficiency. Now advice is to have arms and face uncovered to allow sun rays to do their job for at least 30 mins a day!!
So the sun tanning is necessary for something positive - just don't roast yourself like a chicken coz that's not good either - find a happy medium I guess !!

Darkening of the skin is caused by an increased release of the pigment melanin into the skin's cells after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and protects the body from absorbing an excess of solar radiation, which can be harmful. Depending on genetics, some people can darken quickly and deeply whereas others do not darken much at all.
Not because you are "cooking" your skin. You just need to know how to properly protect yourself which many do not.

A little bit of a natural tan can be okay- even good- for you, but people that tan to excess want to "look good". I have no idea how having that crappy bronze skin makes anyone look good; I love pale skin and prefer to stay pale. I try to stay out of the sun and will even cover my skin when going into it. (It is funny/ironic, however, that I tan extremely easily and don't want tans while I have friends that have an extremely hard time tanning and would kill for tans. =P They think I'm nuts.) ;-D

Because people don't really think about it as cooking their skin. They just know they're going to look "s0o0o0o0 hott!!!"
Or that's the idea I get. *shrugs*

Because it is 'sexy' that is why my mom and sister tan. But my dad is tan because he works outside all day, he can't really help it.

thats not exactly true tho....your skin actually is healthy when melanin is present...so to a point tanning is acutally healthy, it even releases endorphines that make us happy. so its not so bad really unless you overdo it.

ummm huh no you dont, you get brown because the melanin in your skin is reacting with the suns rays...the more melanin you have, the darker you will be. youre not "cooking" unless youre turning red.
