Ok I have heard a lot of people say that a little bit of salt goes a long way when you have mollies...1tsp or so, to about 5 gallon tank. But what I haven't heard is, Will this affect the other fish??
I have 5 tiger barbs and 3 mollies, I am still going to get a pleco.

My question is, will this little bit of salt hurt, help or not affect the other fish in the tank??

All living things need to have some amount of salt for basic life functions. I've worked in pet stores and salt is used to ease stress in shipping and disease prevention. I've personally kept fish in as high as a tablespoon per gallon, but the barbs are a little more sensitive to salt than are the mollies. About a tablespoon for the 5 gallons should be a good compromise.

That amount of salt will be just fine for your tiger barbs and for the future pleco. There are a very few fish that don't do well with even low amounts of salt in the tank, but very, very few would have any problem at all with 1 tsp per 5 gallons. I would even suggest 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons as a safe level for the fish you have and plan to keep. It would be even better for the mollies and no problem at all for the others.

I would also point out that your tank is way over stocked and if it's not a problem now it will be within a few months. You really need a 10-20 gallon tank for the fish you already have, much less a pleco. Even in a 20 gallon I would suggest you not get a common pleco as they get so large. A bristlenose pleco would be ok in a 20 gallon tank, but you don't need to add any fish to your already over crowded 5 gallon.

that amount of salt will be fine for barbs and plecos. salt is tough on amazon fish -- like south american catfish, tetras, angelfish -- usually its ok with others though.
