Three friends and I will be in Bayeux, France for two nights beginning 27 June, 2007. We'd like an experienced tour guide to show us the beaches of the DDay invasion who has good knowledge of the military aspects and social history of nearby liberated villages.

Many companies offer excursions to the D-Day beaches from Bayeux or Caen for about €35-40 per person for a half-day, €80 per person for all day, and about €450 for groups of eight (all prices include entry fees, some levy a surcharge of about €15 for Caen pickup). Some companies provide excellent commentary to these moving sights, while others are so-so. These companies offer the best service:

British-owned Battlebus has top-notch guides; it offers a full slate of tour options from Bayeux (Arromanches pickup can be arranged) and gets the best reviews from historians (www.battlebus.fr, tours@battlebs.fr).

Victory Tours is a one-man show run by friendly Dutchman Roel; he's informal but very informative, covering sights mostly in the American sector (best to reserve in advance, departs from Bayeux only, www.lignerolles.homestead.com).

For a French perspective, try Alain Chesnel's Bayeux-based Overlord Tours. Personable and sincere Alain is committed to explaining the American sector to visitors (www.overlordtour.com, achesnel@wanadoo.fr).
