I am 23 years old and will be traveling to Rome, Italy with three college friends. On the agenda is an Italian wedding for a friend of one my fellow tripmates. I will simply be a guest and do not know the bride or groom, therefore, do not want to attract too much attention, yet want to look appropriate and elegant (you know, not narrow out the odds of making Italian friends). I know women should not bear their shoulders, so is a sleeved dress more appropriate, or could we do a strap dress with a shawl? Please help!

it also depends on the weather,
but i would suggest a dress with a shawl. A long sleeve dress always seems a bit old ladyish! But really don't worry about it,
you are going to be in ITALY!!!!!
HAVE FUN!!!!

I have been to Italy 3 times and my sister lived there for 3 years. There are some things to consider. Is the person getting married American or Italian? What about the groom? If they are both American do as you would in America. If one is Italian, consider both cultures. I must tell you that woman in Italy dress very beautifully! Even on a random Saturday they are dressed in what we might consider prom attire just to hang out in town. They do not wear shorts! I learned that the hard way. It's pants or a skirt or capris. I wouldn't wear strapless, but a thin strap would be nice. Just below the knee is a perfect lenght and a nice material is a good idea. Believe me, these women know how to dress and even the 90 year old women where high heels :-) Have a great time!

This question is old, someone else could have your same problem, and I give my answer.
Most Italian weddings are celebrated in Spring and Summer, as an Italian I've been to a lot of weddings.
I'm a woman from northern Italy, last Summer I was invited to a wedding, I wore a light Summer dress, short (over my knees) and with bare shoulders. During the mass in church I wore a bolero and I was the only woman with this habit. The bride wore a dress with bare shoulders just like this:

She didn't cover her shoulders in church, the other young women and girls wore dresses with bare shoulders and no bolero nor jacket in church.
After the mass I took off my bolero.

Having said that, what women shouldn't wear to an Italian wedding:
white (this colour belongs to the bride);
black (is the colour of funerals);
red (wearing a red dress at weddings is tacky).

Wear a dress, over or below the knees is just a matter of tastes. Bare shoulders or covered shoulders is just a matter of tastes.

I haven't heard of not showing your shoulders, but I could be wrong. Either way, I found a website full of the lates ideas for 2007, with both sleeves and shawls. Even if you don't have the money to order one, I'm sure you can get an idea. Good luck!!
