Can you use them to go to work or school? Is it safe? Are there special lanes, just for bikes?

Where do you live?

Thank you for your answer! :) Have a wonderful day! :)

no :(

it's flat, so it SHOULD be a good place to do that, but...

most of the streets in town have no sidewalks. most of the streets in the country have no shoulders, only ditches. most of the intersections have no pedestrian crossing signs. and it's 96 degrees out today. who wants to pedal in that?

Sacramento, CA. has some beautiful and extensive bike trails, and we also have bike lanes on most of our streets. We have lots of trees and this is a pretty area, but I think I'd be a bit nervous riding on the streets, even with the bike lanes. (Most of our buses also have bike racks to make it easier for bike-riders to get from one area to another.)
Near-by Davis, CA. is a college town and is beautifully set up for bike riding.

Well, unfortunately it isn't. I have a friend who was killed while riding about a year ago while training for the Cape Argus race. He was riding in the special lane set aside for bike riders...

Not very good
There are bike lanes but they are more for recreation than for commuters. There are too many trucks, SUVs, and mini-vans on the road. I've been hit once and have at least 1 close call per week.
I still ride to work daily though.

We have a large city here in Austin, Texas and it is near half a million people...
However we have plenty of hike and bike trails all over town...
Lots of parks and trails to ride in..
Also, our city bus lines have bike racks for when it is too far to ride your bike someplace, you can wait at a bus stop and place your bike on the outside of the bus on the bike rack...
Pretty handy I would say...

My town is so safe and calm. You’d definitely enjoy riding on a bike.
