I am looking to change jobs and would like to make contact with other employers through my hotmail account. If I use my current employer's internet access, can they detect what I do. For example, if I have a resume on a flash drive and attach it to an e-mail through hotmail.com, can they detect it??

You bet that they can, the first guy is wrong. They can see where your traffic is going and what you are sending if they have the tools.

However, they can not legally monitor your email traffic. They may say you have to consent to monitoring, and this is true, however, they will not start investigating people unless they find illegal issues, such as kiddie-porn, or the giving away of trade-secrets, etc. Again, they can only start an investigation if they discover illegal activity while performing daily maintenance tasks. They can not activily read your email if they want.

So, if you are aloud to access hotmail, you should be fine if you are doing legal activity. If they didn't want you to have access to hotmail, they would just block it with a proxy or firewall.

Again, they can track you, but it is illegal to do so just for the sake of tracking.

In situations like these it would be best to not use your employer's internet at all. The only reason you should do this is if your employer knows you are looking for a job and is fine with it. Otherwise you are risking getting fired. I don't think the resume can be detected but if someone happens to be near you while you're sending it then you might get caught.

Tread carefully.

It is possible that your company monitors your internet traffic and files sent across there network.

However it is illegal for them to access your hotmail email.

also if your expecting a good reference from them it might not be a good idea to conduct future business at work

Yes they can. Just depends on how closely they monitor the user's internet activity.

Yes they can, if they have an IT person with knowledge of WAN traffic sniffer software thru the router. They can log all outside connections and trace the originator.
Better to find out the company policy and protect yourself.

Yes...

It depends on how your internet access is going outside world... (ie.. if it is through a proxy server)..

However, everything can be watched and traced...
