The national parks are probably the most scenic places. Yosemite frequently comes out at the top of favorites polls followed by Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. If you only have a week or two, I'd recommend flying to San Francisco and visiting Muir Woods (across the Gate Bridge in Marin County), the San Mateo Coastline (along highway 1 south of San Francisco), Big Basin State Park (on Hwy 9 east of Santa Cruz), Monterey and Carmel (about 40 miles south of Santa Cruz) and then head east to Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. You could easily drive to all those places in 2 weeks and spend most of the time sightseeing instead of driving long distances. If you have a bit of extra time, stop in "Gold Country" east of Sacramento on the way back to see where the 1849 California Gold Rush took place at Angel's Camp.
