In maths terms you are firm grounds because it is theoretic, there can always be one more, this infinity +1 is still infinity, time is just a curved ball, but what about cosmologically speaking?

Every now and again I start thinking about the end of the universe / multiverse and it makes my head hurt because there's no answer I can logically accept.

The accepted theory is the mother of all Big Bang* spews out particles that cool and expand to create the universe...

But even before then, there was the 'void' to be filled. What is holding the vaccuum of space? If the (matter of the) universe is expanding into the 'nothingness' of infinity, where is this nothingness? You can't fill something that isn't there!

There are some things in life and in the universe that are not for us to understand. Thomas Aquinas spent his own carrier writing philosophies about God an contemplating on the existence of nature, the universe, reality, the divine, and the moral order. some of his last words were 'If you try and understand the unintelligible, you are far away from even grasping the most basic existence of it'. Sometimes we need to let go and realise that everything is impermanent. Live in mystery and and you will be set free. The only non-falsifiable 'truth' is the here and now.

you might not enjoy this as an answer, but it is a 'philosophy' which can allow you to relax on the long run.

Thinking about it further.............. Ok lemmi try....

The universe is eternal...non ending.....It is the matter of source and the base of all . We find it so hard to grasp, infinity, unending and impermanence because in our very thoughts, experiences and knowledge of things have a beginning and an end. Our own cognitive and sensory system are circuited in a way to have a beginnings and end. Every atom in our body seems to have forms which have beginning and ends. our own lives and existences have begining and ends... all motivated by cause and effect. birth and death, motion and rest.

The universe is eternal...non ending. It is above us...a different dimension to human experience and it breaks the laws of human experience and perception. It is impermanent yet still, empty, yet never ending.

that's why it makes your head hurt....it is an intruder to the very base of your knowledge and experiences. it shakes the dogmas of your mind. that infinity cannot be understood by us. it is not to be understood. we can theorise about it... but we will always limit ourselves.

You're thinking too close-mindedly...
Think simpler.
My idea is basically that there is no filling of the nothingness. We don't even exist, and all order that we ever imagined has all been an illusion.
This is how I think it goes:
If humans were to travel into time at any point, past present or future, then there would be a safety net created for our conciousness. If humans ever will, have, or are traveling into time, then we're living in that saftey net as we speak. This is because we need something to fall back on if there is ANYTHING changed in the time that we traveled to. If we went into the future past or present, and we changed something, then when humans reached that point in reality, time would be complete chaos. If there was ever any chaos in time, then nothing exists. We would already be gone. Everything would be gone.
That got really off subject...sorry.
Ultimatley, there is nothing to hold the vacuum of space. That's what infinity is. Nothing ever stops. Nobody can ever comprehend infinity, I don't think. Humans weren't built to understand such complicated things...I mean, if we did, nobody would ever question things. And life would be pointless and boring if there were no questions.
I can't really answer your question, all I can give you is my guess...
I hope this helps. :~)

The real paradox comes from misconceptions of "space", "expansion" and "void". Space is the distance between objects, and when there were no objects, there was no space, or "void" to "expand" into. The moment a chance fluxuation in space-time created the first particle in "our" space-time, its energy density exceeded allowable bounds and set forth a chain reaction that populated our known universe within the first billionth's of a second. The "expansion" was actually an "inflation", meaning that although the distance between newly created objects proceeded at the speed of light, making the total "expansion" of the universe seem to violate the laws of relativity, the actual inflation created not only the distance between objects, but the net size of the universe. Since there is no "out there" or "void" beyond the existing universe, "Infinity" will only exist "if" the inflation does not stop, which might be the case since it actually appears to be accelerating.

You cannot perform mathematical operations on infinity. It is not a variable nor a constant, it is a symbol. You can say, for all X I can get Y > X if Y = X + 1. This proves that real numbers do not end, hence they are infinite.

The mathematical concept of infinite can be expressed metaphorically in terms of the seemingly infinite universe, but this is getting into the physical world whereas the mathematics is concerned simply with abstract concepts.

It's really not all that hard. What'll really hurt your head is if you start getting into the continuum hypothesis. Consider, I have the set of all real numbers. The size of the set is infinite. I now create the power set of this set (a set of ordered pairs consisting of combinations of the first set, so let's say I start at (0,0), (0,1).. etc...). The size of this power set is infinitely more dense than my original infinite set.

I myself too got my head spinning trying to imagine where is our universe at. I'm not a scientist so this is no any kind of theory, but just my opinion base on what I've read so far.

I once read about this article about how there might be a higher layer of reality that is not comprehensible by mankind. It gives an example that if we were to monitor a goldfish in an aquarium with 2 different camera at different side of the tank, we comes to conclusion that it's two different goldfish with same properties, while in actual fact, it is the same goldfish that's being observe, but this is not in the reality of the observer who can only observe from the 2 camera. It goes on to suggest that everything in our universe may be interconnect in a way we don't know.

I don't know how far true is that but I think it goes to show that there are things out there that we don't know of, and because there are so much missing pieces of the puzzle, we'll never be able to comprehend the entire picture.

IMO, all this universe that we know, all this expending universe is merely a universe that is observable to us, that can be comprehend by our level of intellectual. Any other thing that exist in our universe that is in the realm of a higher order of reality will never be known to us. We can't imagine it because its outside humans intellectual capabilities.

New theories such as superstring theory does suggest our observable, expanding universe isn't the only thing that there is. It's just part of a multiverse system and god knows what there is after multiverse.

Just like how mankind once thought the entire universe revolves around planet Earth, we eventually learn that Earth is just another tiny nothing-special planet circulating around a what turns out to be a not so special star. Our universe may not be a one and only, unique thing after all. Mankind tend to think that we are special and whatever we can see is all there is, which often turns out to be wrong.

My biggest question about the "Big Bang" theory is that the theory dictates a single point in time and space that this occurred. With our new information from the Hubble Telescope, more and more galaxies are being discovered each day!! Some of those galaxies are younger than our own and some are much older!!! If Big Bang occurred, then all galaxies would be moving from an singe point, and this is not happening. We should be thinking of a new theory, because this one now, doesn't work!!!

The human mind seems to label and define everything. We have a word or sound associated with all things. Therefore we can read, speak, and identify this object or that. In math terms everything is labeled so that the human mind can grasp it and relate to it logically. That is the platform from which you are thinking about that which we call infinity. But is infinity a full grasp of that which the word labels? From your discussion it would seem not. So logically it can not be approached. Even the word expanse does not help the human mind to grasp what it is that we have labeled it.

I kind of think of it like the chicken and the egg. It doesn't matter which came first because eggs come from chickens and chickens come from eggs and we will never know for sure in this lifetime how and/or what created both. The only way to remain sane is to except that fact and believe we will either know such things when we are able to comprehend such things, or maybe we all have an innate understanding of everything that we can only realize at our own individual pace through this lifetime and possibly other lifetimes we have and/or have had to discover what we already know but don't remember yet. Anyways, its all very interesting to a lot of us and will work out the way it does regardless of how much we are able to figure these things out or not. We are so lucky to experience these thoughts and be a part of such Awesomeness and I for one am very grateful.

God is infinite and the infinity we are expanding into; time is the paradox.

Don't forget the music, the vibes, that is where mathematics needs to relate. The rest is just the limited human mind looking for a way to control and organize all the stuff of perception.

Hurting heads, fatigue and even anger are at one end; joy, awe and imagination at the other. Some call it the mind of the spirit.

In some respects your problem is similar to the 'experts' who could not accept the concept of the number zero.

look it goes like this
time and space only started after the big bang.can you accept that?
if you accept that you can understand all else.Hawking stated that asking the question "what came before the big bang?" is like asking "what is north of north?".
now if you accepted this theory that all time and space started after the big bang and you know that the big bang was caused by an ultra dense, highly energetic point, then you will realize that this point occupied all dimensions.if this point was space and time when it exploded all that was inside it would have to expand right?so now if all dimensions were the size of this little particle they could expand into nothing but yet if there was an explosion there was an evolution of mass and energy.since this mass and energy can't be created or destroyed(you can only inter convert them).hence this will prove that the very spacial dimensions expanded from that point onwards and also as long as this matter exists, time will continue to increment.hence we see the universe expanding.not into a space or into anything, but it is by itself increasing its own size due to its enormous energy and mass and insufficient space for it to remain it.
u get it now?
