A person is a senior citizen at 65. However, sociology has basically three different definitions of "old"

Young old is roughly 65 to 72 during which time persons are still mostly vibrant, healthy, and independent.

Old or middle old is roughly 73 to 79. During this time significant diseases of aging tend to become issues for the individual, such as hearing loss, bone disease, and advanced forms of chronic disease, such as arthritis, diabetes, etc.

Finally there is old old which is 80 up. Here we often see the classic images of the aged and this level is generally what people call elderly.

The term elderly can also be used to describe anyone person whose age is unknown but are clearly "old"

Finally, the term elderly is used by certain senior groups as a generalized term for anyone 65 or older.

Take your pick.

When someone old is calling them old they are elderly. For instance someone 57 is calling someone old they must be quite old. I would say if they look wrinkled and frail and move very slowly then they are elderly. But a senior citizen is from 50 up. Because you start getting stuff from aarp at age 50 they give you a senior menu at some restaurants at 55. Senior living starts at 55. You can retire at 55. But then you can't get social security until 62. so it varies from 50 - 62. However you have elderly people at 90 who are still quite vital and productive. They are very fortunate. I applaud them. I'm going for productive at 90. So, wish me luck.

I am getting a kick out of the answers you are getting. I am 66, do not consider myself to be elderly at all, and in fact, feel uncomfortable accepting Senior discounts! We all age differently. There are those I am close to who are 57/58, have serious restrictions upon what they can do, and how they do it. It is not a matter of age, but of genetics, how you have taken care of yourself in life's journey, and luck of the draw. Look around you...you do not remember that when I was young, people who were 55 WERE old! My parent's generation changed that, for they remained well dressed with the times, were/are always active, and can run circles around me! My Grandmother, on the other hand, wore Red Cross shoes after she was married, wore her hair in a bun from the day she was married! Times certainly have changed, and long with them, our definition of "Senior," and elderly. Hopefully, I will never become "elderly." Time will tell. But don't let anyone kid you, the aches and pains DO happen, but in the long run, any day spent above ground IS a good day, even to youngsters.

I believe that by the age of 65, a person would be considered elderly. A senior citizen is someone that is retired which is on average someone at the age of 65. Elderly and senior citizen are synonomous..for the most part.

The senior Citizen age used to be 65. I think because that was when you would receive your Social Security. They've changed it now to age 62.

as far as elderly. . .I think you are as young as you feel, and with all we know now about health, good eating, exercise and activity. . .I see many retirees enjoying the best of life well past the age of 80 or so. . ..

Elderly is different from person to person.

Ask a child if a 30 yr. old is elderly and you'll probably hear yes.

Ask a 30 yr. old and they will say 60.

Ask a 60 yr. old and the answer might be 120.
