Hi little woman,
I live in the Algarve and am a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language. I really enjoyed teaching here but have given up teaching for a while because it was difficult to make a living from it because the economy is having a bit of a blip. Most teachers are employed on 'green receipts' ie. you get paid per class not a set salary. So if you can get a full time table you can make a good wage but its not secure- I did very well during the summer holidays doing intensive courses for teenagers but struggled the rest of the year. You can teach English after school in a Portuguese school but you really need to be able to speak portuguese else the kids just take advantage- trust me I found out!! There are plenty of good English teaching jobs in institutes and businesses in Lisbon and a few institutes in the Algarve. I've worked in both. In the Algarve the institute I worked for struggled a bit to have enough students for two teachers because a lot of the kids went to what are called 'explicacoes' or explanations which cram them for the next test and are cheaper than lessons and a lot of businesses employ people seasonally and don't want to invest in them.

I would search the net for language institutes in Albufeira (I can't think of any off the top of my head) but also consider working as a freelance teacher for business people at their homes or workplaces. I did this for a while and only gave up because I didn't have a car and was often spending 2 hours getting to and from a one hour lesson. Again a little bit of Portuguese woul be handy for agreeing the initial terms etc.

I know that one of my students who was 17 started working part-time in childcare attached to one of the big hotels and was being paid as well as I was as a teacher although that was for evening work. You may well find it easier to get a contract with a set salary as a child carer than as a teacher but you may have to work some evenings or weekends. Contact the big hotel chains around Albufeira.

So really its up to you- I would choose the one that appeals to you most, consider what hours you're willing to work and if you need the security of a set salary.

I just saw the post above- when you get here and have decided to stay go to the Servicio de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) in Faro to register as a resident -if you don't do it within a few months they will fine you!

Good luck!

In Algarve there is a large english speaking community, and we have lots of english speaking tourists (all year, not only in summer), so, childcaring would be a lovely idea and you can bet you wouldn't be unemployed, especially if you work hard and maybe put on your own business.
If you love children, that's the right job for you. Also, if you learn portuguese you can provide child caring for portuguese children too, and they are LOTS in Algarve.
English teaching is not so wanted because there are hundreds of places where we can learn english here and portuguese children are now learning english in first grade already (new government decision). My 6 y.o. is already speaking learning lots of stuff.
You could combine the 2: child caring and some funny english lessons for kids, in order to entertain portuguese kids and help them learn best.
Don't forget to legalize your situation before you come. If you don't have a working permission that can be difficult for you. Contact the Portuguese Embassy near you and tell them your situation and ask for guidance. I'm missing data here to give you a full answer. I even don't know where are you coming from...
They will inform you of all you need to know in order to come here to live and work without any legal problems.
I wish you the best of luck in your studies and also in coming here.
If you come, send me an email! Maybe you can take care of my kids?! My 6 y.o. already speaks a little english and I'd love the twins would learn too.
We go often to Algarve because we have a summer house there.
:o)

HI! there lot's of private english teaching schools that ask for native english speakers to teach...and in the algarve you have a lot of brits, so childcare, and other things linked to hotels are a chance for people that speak good english!
