1. Go to college and obtain a degree or your life will be absolutely miserable. You can't get a half way decent paying job anymore without a degree. Employers will demand degrees for jobs that don't even pay much or require degrees. It doesn't matter what your degree is in...just get one. Get a degree in "Wine Tasting" if you have to...just get one. There's a position and pay ceiling in the workplace for non-degree holders. You will not break that ceiling without a degree. Get a degree, and break the ceiling. You don't want to be stuck in one low pay bracket. That will happen if you don't get a degree. Uhh, degree holders will compete for jobs with non-degree holders. Who do you think will get the job? Yap, you guessed it...the degree holder. Society is obsessed with degrees, you have to feed the beast by getting a degree or you won't be valued, and you'll live a miserable life. Satisfy all the college requirements no matter what you have to do. BEG, BORROW, OR STEAL...JUST GET A DEGREE. Degree holders are the masters. Non-degree holders are the slaves. Would you rather be a slave or master? Well, without a degree, you might as well be the slave. Degree holders are valued. Non-degree holders are not valued. If you don't have a degree, you're screwed. You might as well be dead if you don't have a degree.

2. Join the military (not the best thing to do) if you can pass the ASVAB, get through basic training, and technical school. The Air Force should be your top choice. The Air Force has higher standards of living. Actually, they have higher standards of everything.

You (and many people) forgot a REALLY good option:

Get into a Trade! Apprenticeships are usually 4 years. You have on the job training as well as book work. Every person you work with is your teacher; you can learn more from a guy who's been in the trade 30 years than a classroom.

I have a BS in Business; it would take me over 5 years in my career field to make the kind of money my tradesman husband made during his Apprenticeship. He didn't accrue all the debt I did in Student Loans; and his learning was applicable knowledge NOT theory.

Society overlooks the non-degree blue collar worker. They take for granted all the things they have because of those people who have physical jobs.

btw: Employers have so many degreed people to choose from, they can hire a person with a Masters for the same $$ as a Bachelors. A degree doesn't guarantee you a job.

This is not a question: it's a diatribe, but I'm going to "answer" it anyway. The reason employers want people with college degrees is because it shows the person is persistent and can overcome obstacles. It takes a lot of courage, time, and financial sacrifice to obtain any degree. Employers appreciate that and reward college graduates with jobs. A person who refuses to make the effort will not be chosen. This is a rough world we live in and employers need strong, creative people willing to learn and change with the times.

Both situations are full of heuristics. What burns me up is situation number two. The purpose of the military is not to pander to your "standards for living." The propose for the military is to accomplish the missions you are given.

You can get life skills in the military and then go to college after wards if you want. College degrees help you get a job, but they are not always necessary. Look at the founder of Dell Computers. He dropped out of college and became a billionaire. The best advice to give ANYONE is to strive for your best and reach out for that dream. NEVER give up, and keep motivated.

Best of luck....
