Is Professor Snape good or bad? Why?

I think he will end up being a good guy. I'm almost positive that there was more behind his evil scene than what JKR gave us in the 5th book. (If there isn't that's pretty lame. Having a character go to the "dark side" without explaining it is pretty crappy storytelling.)

However, I can also see where she would throw a loop and make him a bad guy, just to spite people like me who aren't ready to demonize him.

He made his sister a promise to protect her son. He made a magickal blood oath that he cannot break. Therefore, when Malfoy did not kill Dumbledor as ordered, to protect the boy from being killed, Snape did it for him. Snape had no other choice, or the other deatheaters standing there would have killed Malfoy.

I hope in the last book Snape will get to redeem himself.

Dumbledore was scared before he was killed, he had lots more to do - finding all those Horcruxes.
