If it still works, make every effort to donate it to someone somewhere. It won't do anybody any good sitting at the town's landfill. Some parts are toxic, so we hope that it never gets there.

You didn't tell us where you live, and I don't blame you. So use a google search like this to find a place to donate computers near you.

watertown ct computer donation

You see, Iive near Watertown, Connecticut, so I searched like that. It turns out, there is a place right here in town that I was not aware of. There are also two other places that are nearby.

But if your monitor does not work, then modify your google search to look for:

watertown ct computer recycling

Here, I found a place that takes them for recycling, but also discovered that my town has a FREE disposal schedule, so I can dispose of on through the town's sanitation department.

So start at http://www.google.com and look for the proper way to get your old equipment used by someone else, or recycled properly.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

the same way you would dispose a TV with a CRT

The easiest and safest way to dispose of a CRT is to let a technician take it to be returned to a CRT manufacturer, which has the ability to rebuild the tube and restore it to functioning ability again.
In October 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency created rules for disposing of CRTs in the United States, stating that CRTs must be brought to special recycling places. In November 2002, the EPA began fining companies that disposed of CRTs through landfills or incineration. Regulatory agencies, local and statewide, monitor the disposal of CRTs and other computer equipment.

Take it to your local recycling center. If you don't have one, and your town has a big garbage pickup day once a year or so, wait until then.
