I propose that the best kind of leadership occurs when people follow you because they like who you are and what you stand for. This occurs only when you are comfortable and happy with yourself, when you have a sense for who you are and show you are already leading - yourself.

This is not always easy to understand or do. It is probably the most important thing that we can learn during our school years. It is usually impossible to learn at home because parent's tend to want their children to grow up in their (the parent's) image. By the time you get into the workplace, if you have not yet established your own sense of identity, you can find yourself competing with coworkers and that's a no good.

So how do we find ourselves when there is no class to teach us? First follow your heart and focus on whatever you find most energizing whether it is a particular classwork subject, sport, social activity, voluntary work or hobby. When you discover your enthusiasm others will find it in you and support you with their interest, enthusiasm and sometimes their help - this may be a teacher, friends at school, a friend's parent, neighbors, club or group members.

So, in answer to your question, leadership in ones school life is the same as it is at any time in your life. It is other people's enthusiastic response to who you are, and school life provides a wonderful opportunity to find this out.

Leadership is important if you're aiming for college. Join a club or a team and become an officer. Student government is very important. Do something positive that other students will want to imitate, like sponsoring a community service project or volunteering to help an individual or a group. Think creatively. In short, be a positive influence during your school years.
