Just because I haunt the same old places, where the Mem'ry of lingers, everywhere.....Just becuase I'm not the the happy guy I use to be....She thinkks I still care....

My dad died in January 1996, I was living alone In a tiny town in Central Iowa at the time on an old farm acerage 6 miles up a gravel road from town, I had been a truck Driver but had had my licences pulled the previous summer for an accident, I did not cause. I fought it in the lcal court, with fim evidence of the hills and curves and officiaal police measurements of skid marks and est, speeds, but to no avail, I was "coutry-fried, the driver was the only business in the town besides the c0-0p and the Judge actually slept through the entire hearing, and had a cassette player recording it for "future" listing. thngs where very bad, my wife had divorced me a year previous, and I was living alone, until my dad came out to live for a few nonths, he wnret back home when his cancer got worse, he was 59, and wa far away slowly dieing in the Vets hospital, my brother called me at the gas station I was working for less than minimum wage , things where very bleak all around. One of the last thinks my dad said to me in mid January was give it three days, Ed, give it three days, things will change. I went back to NH for the funeral and drove illegally back with all his old guitar equipment packed i n his old car, got back to my isolated old farm acerage and started going through his song book. I came across this song, that was familiar to me, and it came out the year I was born, nd my dad first played out the day I was born, So I felt some attachment in a odd sence I guess, so I started working at learining the song. But I could never get it right when singing it, to make a long story short, I kept at it night and day for about a week, and I could still hear my dadd saying thats not how it goies in that part, etc. He had died on the 8th, and his birthday was the 26th. it was the 23rd, and I said I just couldn't get that song for some reason, I was going to give it up, and It kept coming back to me that silly line, give it threedays, I said ok I'll give iyt three more days. On the 26th, I got in the mail a letter from the Dept of motor vehicles in Iowa, stating that for 420 I could get my liense back, the other driver was sued by his own insurance company for falsaifying his claim, they used my evidence against him! I was so excited, but I had no phone to call anyone and lived far from town, so I picked up the guitar and did "She thinks I still care" perfectly! I then kept seeing in my minds eye, my dad smiling and approving , and had a sence that he knew all about the license being given back, it was like his birtday gift to me, I got my license back, I culd drive again and make some money, and I got the song right, which the real gift was not giving up, and the songs content was good therpy for my soul also about the divorce, a medicine well learned, thanks Dad.

George Jones is running through my bones! the lyrics to "She Thinks I Still Care" are at the very top of songwriting craftsmanship. Truly inspirational, and something most of us have gone through in life. Long live the Possum!
