Since you are asking this in terms of Computer printer:

A matrix is a layout used to print letters on older "dot matrix" printers. They worked by using a series of wires to press on a ribbon and put dots onto paper. The series of dots needed to make an "a" for example would be called a matrix. The printer driver does not sent a letter "a" to the printer, rather it sends the instruction (matrix) needed to product that letter.

in context of printers ,a dot matrix printer is the one which we usually see in offices, it makes characters by forming various tiny black dots on paper
