One company, Exxon, makes NET PROFIT over a $100 Million Dollars a DAY
And the US Government subsidizes them...Not only don't they pay any taxes but the US Government gives them money..Their current Net Profit for last couple of years has been over one hundred million dollars a day, A friggin' DAY..Net Profit....Only one of the oil companies. Add all the rest up and the Daily amount of Net Profit is absolutely staggering...
......But they won't build a $3 bil refinery because it's "too expensive" without tax $$.........exxon mobil is still on government subsidized corporate welfare........
and then has the gaul to screw the consumers that pay for it.

What do you think?

Old man - check and see how much of the fines that Exxon paid for the Exxon Valdeez spill........$0

scott b - do the research - Exxon has to file reports - they are available with a little searching. If you do not believe it all, look for yourself. There are far too many links and data to support the summary I gave. Look up tax shelters and subsidies for big oil also.

Monopoly's are a crime in America that the Bush Administration is ignoring right now. Exxon Mobil is right at the top of the list with Enron. You do realize that Exxon Mobil has yet to pay it's pollution "FINES" for the Exxon Valdez oil spill on the Alaskan coast line. Now I would say that is being used as an excuse not to improve the refinery situation here in America. Listening to the ridiculous comments coming from the righty's just reinforces this argument. Record profits with inflation has always been the Republicans way of increasing the stock market without lifting one finger to improve any situations. Cuts are the first remedy they look for. Pointing fingers is the second.

How much does the Federal governement make off of us for that same amount of gasoline that Exxon makes its profits from? The answer is somewhere between 2 and 3 times as much profit, all net as well.

And as for why there are not new refineries being built, why don't you ask the liberal democrats in Congress. I think you will find that it is more profitable for the Congress to keep the environmentalist groups happy than the American people. As it turns out, Congress, and mostly liberal democrats, get their re-election funds from environmentalist groups who do not want any more refineries built. Congress then turns around and institutes heavy fees, permits and other expenses on the oil companies making it too costly for the refineries to be built. Ever here the term "not in my back yard"? A term made famous by Californians.

Oh and by the way, Exxon is not the most profitable oil company in the world. They are in fact 4th largest.

I think we should stop subsidizing ALL businesses, but also not make it so difficult for them to find new energy sources. In fact, I would tend to add incentives to the oil companies to find those new energy sources and the automotive industry to take advantage of those new energy sources.

The reality is that those who make their fortunes off of the resources of a country should give something back to the country as a whole, whether it's some sort of royalty or taxes they should pay. Unfortunately we now have the best Congress money can buy, even those who rail against "Big Oil" and such are often getting rich off of it themselves, can we say Hillary? Whatever the fact is that until we start electing people on the basis of what they can do for the country as a whole, and as long as a minority of environmental activists hold sway through money and votes to keep us from having greater access to our nations natural resources, using junk science as the platform for their movement,we will be at the mercy of companies like Exxon, etc. Whether some like it or not energy is prosperity, without it we are sunk. I've actually been waiting for the other shoe to drop with some agreement like Kyoto, think it's bad now,you haven't seen anything yet.

The federal government makes money through the sale of oil and natural gas leases offshore, then the oil companies pay royalties on every barrel of oil produced. If there is a pollution incident, the oil company pays to clean up the mess and very large fines to the federal coffers. Yes the profits are huge, but so are the profits on Micro soft, Dell, Apple, Burger King, Mc Donald's, companies are not in business to lose money sweetheart. The liability on the the backs of oil companies is immense. Our dependence on foreign oil is unacceptable.
Check to see how much of your tax dollars subsidize air lines and railroads and the exorbitant salaries they pay to their execs.

Can you cite a source, or should we just take your word for it? I question the "not paying taxes", the Govt. "giving" them money, etc... Grow up. Gas prices are determined by supply and demand, economics 101. The reason more refineries aren't built is because people don't want to live near them. The solution is to drill the US, which liberals seem to not want because the environment police seem to think it would be a bad thing to do. Liberals also recommended the fuel additives we placed in gas that are supposedley enviro. friendly. What else you got?

The fact the environmentalists impede building refineries allows Exxon's profits to go up due to supply and demand.
Why won't we allow drilling for more oil? What about the shale oil in Utah and Wyoming? It is in all of our interests to build more refineries and explore and extract more oil from our resources. Companies are in business to make money or as much profit as they can. I hate the high price as much as anyone.

I believe the oil companies announced a profit of what...4 trillion dollars last year?
For the record that looks like
4,000,000,000,000

I think that thoughts on this number are quite obvious

Republicans spend so much of their time telling the American people that the government is corrupt and should never be trusted...

then they get in office and spend their term(s) corrupting the government, making sure it can't be trusted

Maybe the Republicans were warning us.........about them

If Exxon was a non Profit Company, we would only save 10 cents a gallon on Gas.

Now, if the Gov't stop taxing us on gas., we would save almost a dollar a gallion.

You do the math...

I don't have problems with the profits as much as I do with the subsidies to a company that is making billions....and people accuse the human welfare system of being abused....it is nothing compared to what goes on with big business.
