exactly the same thing happened to mine
the frequency of this occuring gets faster and faster until it was so frustrating that the pc just doesn't work anymore
i finally took it in for a check up . . . it was infected by some kind of virus + there seems to be a tendency for windows xp to be infected
suggest you back up all your data files now and send your pc in for a thorough checkup as soon as possible, the longer you wait, the worse it becomes

1 your power supply could be going
2 scan the hard drive to see if it has issues run chkdsk
3 the battery backs up bios so maybe the battery is going dead
4 only other thing i can think of a hidden virus
good luck

What kind of computer, desktop, laptop, is it plugged in or running on battery?
Check the power settings under the control panel (go to start button, and then control panel) Check the settings to see after inactivity does the computer hibernate, or go into standby? Those settings can be modified per your desire...

Is it able to turn back on directly after shutting down? If not, it might be overheating. I would take it apart and blow out any dust/hair/etc. that has accumulated in the CPU heatsink and fan. If you are not comfortable doing this, take it to a professional.

If windows XP encounters a critical error (one that would display the blue screen of death) by default it automatically restarts, with no warning. a way to by pass this is to go to control panel, click on system, then click on advanced, then click on settings on the third section, then uncheck the box for "automatically restart" this should display any error, you would need to troubleshoot from there, also a reformat will probably fix the problem.

When batteries go bad, this is what they do. My Dell laptop's battery is going bad and it constantly flashes a red battery light and will just cut off. They are like $150 for a new one. Check EBay.

It sounds like the unit is overheating. Make sure that there is air flow under the computer when using it.
