SAME WITH SECONDARY IDE THE COMPUTER WORKS FINE UNTIL I PUT ON MY USB NETGEAR WIRELESS ADAPTER ON THE COMPUTER THEN THE SYSTEM CRASHES CAN ANYONE HELP? I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS THE ADAPTER WORKS FINE IN MY DAUGHTERS COMPUTER

The 80 conductor cable just makes it so that an UltraATA-66 and above hard drive can operate at full speed. You probably have a drive that is UltraATA-66 or above, but don't have the cable for it, so it is running at UltraATA-33 speed.

That has nothing to do with the adapter problem...you might want to try updating your USB drivers (download from your computer manufacturer's or your motherboard manufacturer's website).

the primary IDE is the hard drive port in the motherboard. A few years ago, the cable for the primary IDE was switched from a 40 conductor cable to an 80 conductor cable. It would seem that you still have an older 40 conductor cable. Get an 80 and switch it for the 40, or have it done for you.
