I don't live in SF but have visited quite a bit.

Good areas are Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, The Marina, Cow Hollow and Russian Hill.

Avoid the Tenderloin...there maybe some others you should avoid- maybe someone else will go into more detail on that.

I hear the Mission and SoMa are a little grittier than The Marina etc but it depends what you're looking for.

Craigslist is the best way to see whats available in your price bracket.

If money is no object, Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, Marina, etc.

For good weather and nice neighborhoods, Glen Park, north Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, Castro.

For cheaper rents but foggier weather, the Avenues.

Avoid the Tenderloin, Western Addition, Bayview/Hunters Point, some sections of the Mission, and the southeast areas.

I live in the north bay area, and this is only what I know from watching the crime reports on the news.

NOT the Tenderloin! Richmond and Oakland have been having some serious crime problems. The Haight has been having a few problems too, depends on your lifestyle. Same thing with the Castro district, depends on your lifestyle.

I am bias I grew up in Noe Valley LOL. J Church line will take you either straight down town or out towards Daly City. 24th street is your "Main Street" and the weather is NICE. People were always great as well!

GL in your search!

Check out google maps...they took pictures of every street in SF and you can put in any address and see what the street looks like!

A lot of variables you leave unrefined.

- where to live: rent or buying, driven by your income as to what neighborhood you end up in.

- With or without roommate(s): another major factor.

- Ethnicity or Activity: another consideration in your equation.
