Generally cheap to buy = expensive to run.

Depends what you plan to do with it. If you want a workhorse to last well, and provide good prints, but don't require "ultra glossy påhotos" go for a colour laser (they start cheapish now) and you get usually 1500-4000 pages per toner cart set, with inkjets yey are slower and inks cost more than champagne.

If you are going the color laser route, you should check into the Xerox Phaser series. Right now, I believe they are starting in the upper $400's. They use a wax type toner that is pretty cheap, and they print beautifully. I use my Phaser 8500 for making brochures with pictures.

if you don't absolutely need color i would get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828104354

you said it was for document printing, so there you go.

benefits:
-hp
-laser
-10 seconds to print first page
-15ppm black print page
-5000 page duty cycle
-usb
-includes 1 free toner
-150 pages input tray
-toner is only 60 bucks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817102149 which just a tad more then how much it usually cost to swap both ink cartridges (color & black) in most inkjet printers
-toner cartridge rated for 2000 pages

to the poster below me:
the xerox looks nice:

the reviewers at newegg say the toner is expensive?
