Here is the deal, I have already put in my 2 weeks notice this is my last week. My boss was out all last week, due to family problems, and just yesterday, the boss came in just to say hi and bye. And said by the way, your supervisor got in a car accident and is in the icu. Should I feel bad for quitting , feel like I am leaving them hanging short handed. Life is so unexpected....

Since this is a legal forum, and since you didn't ask a legal question, the only thing I can tell you is you can feel however you want. But since a two-week notice is not legally binding outside of a valid employment contract, you could leave or be sent home at anytime during the two weeks without penalty.

Feel as you wish.

You're not responsible for the fact that your boss has family problems or that your supervisor was in an accident. If your company made a decision to terminate your employment, would they delay that decision because YOU had family problems or got in an accident? Probably not. There's no reason to feel guilty.

If you quit your job because you have another job or another commitment that starts in 2 weeks, there's not much you can do. If you were going to be free after quitting, you could offer to stay on temporarily. But on the other hand if the company really needed you that badly, they could have asked you to stay longer, or even made you a better offer to prevent you from quitting.

Life will go on at your company after you leave, and your life should go on too. Your life is more important than your sense of loyalty, and the company probably has no such loyalty towards you. Your life is more important than the company you work for.

If you feel bad about the situation, the best thing for you to do is pay your supervisor a visit at the hospital, and express compassion towards your boss about his sister. If that supervisor makes it through this, he or she will be grateful just to be alive. Your supervisor in the ICU is NOT thinking about what's going on in the office right now, and neither is your boss, and neither should you. It's really not important at all in the grand scheme of things. Get some perspective!

Do you have another job pending? If you do, then you are obligated to report to your new job on time. If you don't have another job waiting on you then you could offer to stay a little longer to help them out.

BTW, I wouldn't feel so bad. If it was such a big deal and they needed people that badly, then the boss could have canceled the second half of his vacation. Especially since he was in town anyway.
