You can go through the publisher. It is very common for them to get mail for authors and they will forward all mail to them. You can also see if the author has a website or published email address. You can often contact them in that manner.

You would send the letter to the author who is just starting out, but for an author who has established himself, you would have to send it to the publisher.

Would you send a CEO an autograph request for one of his baseball players? That is exactly what you would be doing if you wrote to the publisher. They work as a filter. Your best bet is to do some research and contact the author personally. Thus, there is not buffer between your words and his eyes, and if you are lucky, you will receive a personal response instead of the company generated ones.....

There is usualy contact info in the book if not go onto there website and there will usualy be contact info there if not send it to the publisher what is the worst that can happen.

Most authors have a web site...check it out, email them, they will answer. I emailed Eileen Goudge, and she answered me just the other day. The public is who generates their sales.
