My mom said I shouldn't, but I can't see how it would hurt them, especially since you can wash stainless flatware.

You can wash them in the dishwasher but what it does is change the colour of the metal from the heat of the water but that can be fixed with a little white vinigar, then you need to wash the vinigar out by hand.

The reason it doesn't do it to flatware is it's not as high of a stainless steel as pots are.

Stainless steel can go in the dishwasher, but it conducts and retains heat poorly. It's usually layered over aluminum. Some stainless-steel pots have a bottom with a copper or aluminum core

mine have non stainless steel rivets that holds the handles on. These rivets are rusty and corroded, but the pan itself and handle are fine. It does kinda ruin the appearance of the pan, to see ugly rivets.
I have washed them about 30 times so far in the dishwasher.
You might want to make sure that 100% of your pan is stainless steel, becuase mine aren't.

The only problem that I have with that is that the dishwasher does not completely remove starchy residue (like when a pot of pasta boils over) so after a while of only washing in the dishwasher they get kind of stained and dull. One handwashing removes the residue and gets it looking good again, and then you can continue putting it in the dishwasher until it looks dull again.

I've done it for years, and never heard of that.

Stainless steel is just that, stainless. Unless it is a cheap brand they may get a rainbow color to them, but other than that, it is fine to put them in.

My pots and pans are just fine.

My experience is that the hardness of the water will pit the stainless and washing takes more time but the lasting effect will not cost you in the long run..

I never heard of that one....I wash mine in there all the time. If let them air dry the water sitting on them can cause little rust circles where the water was sitting, but run washer with heated dry 'on' or just take them out right away and towel dry.

I have never heard that. I have mostly stainless cookware and use the dishwasher all the time.

It can make them rust, I wash mine in the dishwasher but turn the dry cycle off, it seems to help.
