They got back down to the bay near the open ocean, and disappeared. It's thought that they got out into the open ocean, but nobody saw them go, and they didn't have radio tracking beacons or anything like that on them. As far as I've heard, no whale carcasses have floated up on a beach anywhere, so it's probably safe to assume that they made it out OK.

the previous answer was absolutely correct. By the way, they didn't put transmitters on them due to the fact that they were not healthy when they were in the river and didn't want to stress them further.
